I participated in the artist residency THE BRAIN 8 in Oktober 2022. It was organized between the gaming festival A MAZE Berlin, French Institute of Germany, French Institute of Sweden and Goethe Institute. Together with the amazing artists
Audrey Belaud (narration design & voice over),
Jalil Daif (3D Design),
Mattias Larsen (Sound) and
Marie Urban (Scents),

we developed a VR experience inspired by the paintings of Michel Granger, who also joined us in the studio and collaborated with us on this project.

My part was setting up the VR project in Unity, bringing together art, sound, and narration in the engine, as well as writing scripts for the user interactions. I optimized the performance and the graphics for both HTC Vive and Oculus Quest devices.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We drew heavy inspiration from the painting "Sens dessus dessous" by Granger, which depicts an upside-down city hovering over a little farm house on the ground.
Jalil recreated the floating city in 3D and mapped the painting as textures on top of it, which really gives you the feeling of stepping into the painting. By gazing into the city, you can discover little stories of the people living there when a light turns on in a window and different audio files start playing.
If you look down at your feet, you'll notice that with every footstep you take away more of the black ground, revealing Gangers' famous globe rotating in front of a blue background underneath. For this scene, we 3D scanned Granger's globe to capture the unique textures he painted on it. Granger himself also drew the footstep textures.
On top of the experience, you can hear a voiceover of Granger talking about the importance of balance and what is so fascinating about leaving and seeing traces that other people left behind. Audrey is following his words with an English translation.

MAKING OF:
During the residency, I made a little behind-the-scenes video to show the process behind the VR experience:
